Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
